Early Prevention of Violence Database

The Early Prevention of Violence database consolidates information on resources related to the early prevention (0-6) of violence in one place. As a user of this database, you are aware of the need for effective programs and strategies that target this young population.

It is our challenge to work to reduce violence in society, starting in the early years from birth to age 6. Prevention is believed to be most effective at these early ages as violence is often traced back to early childhood issues of bonding and attachment. "At the earliest stage, violence prevention begins with good health care for mother and child, minimizing violent behavior within the family, and stimulating the development of non-confrontational skills in language and behavior," according to Fred M. Hechinger in Fateful Choices. Also, research indicates that violence has an extremely negative impact on the ability to learn.

Thus, it is obvious that working for violence prevention at these early ages covers a myriad of topics including fostering good parenting skills, discouraging the use of drugs and alcohol by parents and children, encouraging the teaching of conflict resolution, and working toward the reduction of violence in the media. These factors were taken into consideration when developing categories for the materials included in this database. However, it is important to note that when users enter a word or phrase to do a search, the "Find" button will search for the word or phrase inserted in the following fields: category, title, author, publisher, description, organization.

Information in this database is organized into the following categories: Conflict Resolution Organizations; Conflict Resolution Programs and Materials; Organizations Involved in Early Prevention of Violence; Early Prevention of Violence Materials and Programs; Early Prevention of Violence Publications/Articles; Related Conferences; Related Online Resources; and Related Media Organizations.

It is the hope that everyone connecting with this database will be both users and contributors and also that everyone will tell others about the availability of the database. It is the intent that the database will continue to be a work in progress enriched by those who use it. Users are invited to share new resources here online by clicking on the button labeled Register New Resource.

This database is the result of information gathered by a collaborative workgroup comprised of representatives from the Regional Resource Federal Centers (FRC), the National Childhood Technical Assistance System (NEC*TAS), and the National Center for Children in Poverty. Participating organizations include:
